Falls and the elderly

January 19, 2015

Yesterday we had a bad ice storm in the Northeast. My elderly father-in-law slipped and fell on the ice on his driveway, while walking out to get the paper. Unfortunately, this was not the first bad fall he has had in the past few years.

He is OK, with no major damage except a broken pinky. and he is really lucky.

But this incident made me think about fall protection in his home. I am gong to be doing some major remodeling to remove hazards around his home. Better lighting, particularly in his basement area. Cleaning up the clutter. Asking the papergirl to get the paper up on his porch and not his sloped driveway. Buying his shoes with better tread. Falls for anyone are not to be taken lightly, but for older people, they can be deadly.
