Mediterranean Diet beats out Low-fat diet for reduction of heart disease by 30%

Study published this week in NEJM shows that by adding extra virgin olive oil and nuts to the diet of patients with risk factors for cardiovascular disease in addition to the following a Mediterranean diet, these patients benefited by a reduction of heart disease.

The study was stopped early, due to the clear benefit of adding the plant-based fats over the low-fat diet to this patient population, many of whom had diabetes.

At the end of the press conference to discuss this study, there was discussion on how this study, considered by many to be “A”-level evidence, could possibly influence nutrition guidelines. Many are unhappy with the current USDA food nutritional guidelines-  feeling even the http://www.choosemyplate.gov does not go far enough. Is it time for a new pyramid to be built?
